Environment
The activities of the EVS project will take place mainly in the Youth Center of Kalâa Kébira, in a local Kinder Garden, and within the Itinerant Youth Center of Sousse.The green Area of the Youth Center of Kalâa Kébira has two parts: an indoor space with decorative garden plants, and a larger outdoor area that serves for the organization of outdoor activities.
- The volunteer will ensure the maintenance and upkeep of the two area.
- The volunteer will be asked to develop some projects about local biodiversity as a contribution to the environmental Youth Center library and he will organize mass activities for the local youth to promote the local biodiversity.
- The volunteer will be a member of the club “Agenda 21” which is working in the environmental and sustainable development field and he will take part in the activities of the “voluntary club” with the aim of setting a bird cage and a fish aquarium in the indoor garden.
- The volunteer will animate an environmental club for children in a local kinder garden. He will also take part in the activities of the Itinerant Youth Center of Sousse with youth in rural and disadvantaged zones.
Animation
The activities of the EVS project will take place mainly in the Youth Center of Kalâa Kébira, in a local primary school, and within the Itinerant Youth Center of Sousse. The Youth Center of Kalâa Kébira attracts more than 300 young people involved in the various activities offered by the Center like calligraphy, cinema, theater, culture, arts, Karate, bodybuilding, sport...
- The volunteer will animate a club for the youth adhering to the Youth Center. He will have the choice to launch his own club according to his skills (music, dance, painting, language, theater, sport …).
- The volunteer will animate also the same club or a different one in a local primary school (age range 06-13 years old).
- The volunteer will participate in the animation of disadvantaged youth in rural zones within the activities of the Itinerant Youth Center of the region of Sousse.
- The volunteer will elaborate a multimedia support (multimedia presentations, posters, interactive CD…) about the club, its aim, the members, the activities…
The product of the club will be presented periodically through the activities organized by the Youth Center, during the celebration of some national holidays, in the different local, regional or national activities.
Social. Handicap Center
Kalâa Kébira is a small city located in the northeast of Sousse. The Handicap center is situated near the industrial zone, next to the hospital of Kalâa Kébira and a small secondary school.
It hosts mentally handicapped youth (from 5 to 18 years old):
- 1st class (5 – 6 y.o): Their daily activities are limited to some simple tasks to perform, with the assistance of animators (coloring, drawing, writing…).
- 2nd class (7 – 11 y.o): In this class activities are more various. The work of the children is mainly about handmade crafts and educational exercises, training their patience, concentration and accuracy.
- 3rd class (12 – 15 y.o): Tasks are individual for every person and do not require the assistance of animator.
- Computer Class: The media in this class uses special educational programs and interactive exercises specially created for mentally handicapped people. All computer programs are in Arabic language.
Additional activities in handicap center:
- Sport activities: Kids and teenagers from Handicap center can take part in different kind of sports activities, competitions and races. Also the center has a specialized gym for inside activities, trainings and games.
- Gardening: Youth and animators take care of the garden in handicap center and volunteers are welcomed to help them. The Weekly
- Leather workshop (16 – 18 y.o): The goal of this workshop is to prepare the young people to work with different kinds of matereals and to be able to start their own business after finishing the training. This class is attended by boys. They manufacture from leather things as shoes, purses, bags etc. All manufactured goods are sold afterwards in special events.
- Fabric workshop: This is the other workshop specialized for mainly girls. Here the youth works with fabric- sewing, cutting, measuring various articles, such as clothes, pillows, blankets, sheets etc.
Social. Hospitalized Pediatric Patients
Sahloul Hospital is located in Sahloul city (6 Km to the city of Sousse). The School for hospitalized pediatric patients was founded in January 2004 in Sahloul Hospital. Children who attend the school are the one’s suffering from chronic diseases, such as kidney failure, diabetes…
The School Goals
- Provides education for children who don’t have the opportunity to visit normal schools, due to their treatment.
- Maintains the children’s desire to study, help them with adapting to their illness and make it easier for them to integrate in the community.
- Supports children through exams and helps them catch up with what they missed in their absence.
- The school also acts as a mediator between them and the training centers, directing them according to their abilities, interests and physical health.
- Provides cultural and social activities, so they wouldn’t feel left out or different from healthy children.
- The school plays important role in maintaining the relationships between patients and parents and tries to raise their awareness of the emotional aspect of the treatment on their children.
Activities
The volunteer is in charge of the workshops and the English lessons, but can take part in other activities too.
- Obligatory school subjects: Mathematics, Literature, History, etc
- Language classes: English, French, Arabic
- Media classes: Interactive exercises and usage of media
- Workshops: Providing art education, handmade crafts
- Theater club: Helping the children to feel more comfortable when having a dialogue, expressing their opinion on different topics and dealing with external environment in a civilized way.
- Exchange: The purpose of the exchange is to consolidate the communication between hospitalized children and children from primary schools, and to encourage them to continue interacting with other people, outside of their social circle.
- Educational and recreational trips: The goal of those trips is to distract children outside the school, and to educate them by entertainment.
- Games: Depending on their condition, hospitalized children can take part in different kinds of sports activities, competitions and races.
- Cultural activities: Children participate in different events and help with maintaining the school building, depending on their health.
