KENYA. Cadif

Cadif Kenya is an established community based organization with a wide-grass root presence in Kisumu and Nyanza province in Kenya.
The organization is run by young professionals and volunteers, both local and international, who work hard to improve the wellbeing of the youths and the community as a whole in the slum areas of the town.

Our mission is to establish and facilitate sustainable development in Kenya, we want to change lives of the neediest youths, through capacity building, enterprise development, empowerment and education.

Majority of our activities were set up as a response to the high HIV/AIDS prevalence among young people and the subsequent need of preventing the spread of the infection.

However, our field of work has expanded throughout the years and could be generally divided into four
main areas:

HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDS work includes us not only addressing the acute need to prevent the spread of the infection, but also to tackle the related issues of orphaned or vulnerable children who drop out from school to care for their sick relatives or are otherwise affected by the disease, to work with commercial sex workers and their clients who are at the high risk of being infected, but also with the community as a whole to change their ignorance, knowledge, attitude and behavior toward the diseases and people infected by it.

ICT and Governance

Cadif operates computer lab based within the premises of our office and runs ICT classes where different ICT and software packages are being taught. This computer literacy classes enable youths and young adults to gain valuable employability skills and to be self-sufficient.

Entrepreneurship

We are also working to empower youths in the communities who are school drop outs, orphans, displaced people or those who simply do not have enough money to access the well equipped classrooms or training facilities to gain employment skills. Cadif runs practical training, vocational training and entrepreneurship skills programs and provides mentoring for the youth groups to enable them to run their own business. The program helps to develop the business ideas of the participants who are then assisted in obtaining the tools for their trade and are provided with mentoring in starting up and growing of their company.

We also run good governance and youth leadership program, we teach youth in and out of schools on leadership and governance.

Adult education.

Our latest program is the adult education centre. At the moment, we run adult education classes for people who finished class 8 or dropped out from secondary school but want to obtain KCSE certificate.
The classes are very flexible to suit the pupils; they run for four years and end with the KCSE examination. Because of the high demand, Cadif plans to open adult education classes for primary school drop outs and those who have secondary education but were unable to attend colleges and gain professional training. This project contributes to empowerment of young people, to self –sufficiency and reliance and to development of their potential.
